
Cruz, Juana Ines de la
First edition of Fama, one of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz’ most important works, dubbed the Tenth Muse, she was undoubtedly the most famous writer of the colonial period of Hispanic America; the Fama contains the first appearance in print of the Repuesta a Sor Filotea de la Cruz, the famous defense of women’s rights and education, Sor Juana has, in modern academic circles, been regarded as the first feminist of Latin America. The Repuesta a Sor Filotea de la Cruz is considered by some to be the first feminist manifesto, here she fundamentally defends a woman’s right to education, this impassioned letter brought even further criticism and Church intervention.

Contemporary vellum, inked titles on spine, original flyleaves, traces of ties at edges, a little soiled and stained, ink ownership inscription on front free endpaper, second half with dampstaining throughout, mostly marginal and larger to the last quires, and light browning. Excellent copy, second half with mainly marginal damp stain to upper margin, larger to last quires, else very good.
